There are 6 types of quarks called flavors. For the most part, every day matter—all the stuff around us—is composed of only the lightest quarks (up and down) which make up the protons and neutrons in atoms.

Energy is required to create the heavier quarks and they tend to decay (turn into other quarks) shortly after they are made so they aren't around long. The heavier quarks can be made using particle accelerators or come to us from outer space.
